Update from Second Church Leadership Team:
Until further notice, the Second Church building is closed to all gatherings and events, including:
Celebrate Recovery, Oasis, Tiny Tots Tuesdays, Thursday morning Bible study, HSM, JHM, Connect Groups meeting in our building, and GriefShare.
We will be celebrating the Resurrection on Easter Sunday in some capacity but sadly it will NOT happen at the Arena this year. We are committed to on-going communication during this COVID-19 event.
Here is our commitment to each of you moving forward:
1. We are PRAYING for you and we would love to have specific requests - you can send those to us at this email address: firstname.lastname@example.org. Or you can submit the prayer request at the form on the app or the website.
2. We are available via phone or email. Our number at church is 217-442-7306.
3. We are evaluating each day what office hours will look like and will keep you informed moving forward.
4. During this time, we want to meet the needs of our church family. Here is how you can help with this: reach out to those you are connected with that might not be connected to social media or have email. Reach out to them and be a blessing.
Kiley Garrison shared with me this Instagram post:
Please practice social distancing. It's working. Be a hero. Help your neighbor. Take this seriously. We won't know if we overacted and did too much, but we WILL know if we didn't do enough.
May we live our lives today and moving forward with this wisdom from the Apostle Peter:
"Cast all your anxiety on the Lord because He cares for you."
Blessings to you Second Church! May we be the church more than ever!
Dear Second Church Family,
Your leadership team has closely monitored the developing impact of the coronavirus on the world, our country, and our state. We realize there are many different perspectives and opinions regarding the nature and severity of what the CDC is calling the coronavirus pandemic. However, on Thursday, March 12, Governor Pritzker announced a mandatory, statewide cancellation of large-scale events exceeding 1,000 individuals for the next 30 days, and the recommended cancellation of events of 250 people or more until May 1. Additionally, the Governor is also advising that special attention be given to vulnerable populations such as elderly and immunocompromised individuals. Governor Pritzker, like other state governors and county officials, is employing the CDC recommended strategy of social distancing to combat the coronavirus pandemic
Second Church of Christ is a congregation that loves and cares for people. We believe it is imperative that we place the health and wellbeing of our people and our community at the forefront of our decisions. Therefore, until further notice, we are canceling all Sunday morning services and HSM at the Second Church building beginning March 15. While this is a sad and difficult decision, we believe it is the right decision.
However, this does not mean that we are taking a break from church. On the contrary! Starting this Sunday at 9:20 am, you can experience a Second Church service live-streamed through the Second Church Facebook page. This service can also be viewed later on our website at secondchurch.com. If you do not have access to Facebook or the internet, we encourage you to get with someone who does and experience this service together.
This is also not a time to take a break from serving God, from studying his word or prayer. Also, remember that the ministry of the church continues, and even though we are not meeting at the building, your faithful generosity is still vital to the ongoing work of the church. If you have not used online giving before, this would be a great option over the next several weeks.
The Church historically has experienced vitality and growth when faced with difficulty and challenge. This is an excellent opportunity for Second Church to shine and be Jesus to people who need encouragement and hope. The Bible says, “In all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Rom. 8:28). We believe that God is going to do a good work even through this difficult situation.
Finally, we want to thank you for the trust you have placed in us as your leaders of Second Church. You demonstrated and expressed great trust in us as we led you through the REACH Building Initiative and the succession and transition from Drew Mentzer to Greg Taylor. We ask once more for your trust and support as we embark on another season of challenge and opportunity. There are more decisions to come regarding the impact of the coronavirus and other Second Church ministries. These decisions will be announced soon. Ultimately, we believe God’s faithfulness has brought us this far, and He will continue to guide us through this challenging time and on to greater things!
