Our Why

God is blessing Second Church in incredible ways. Each week, we see new faces, growing ministries, and lives being changed by Jesus. Our Next Gen services are now regularly beyond capacity, and many people struggle to find a seat. Our Kids World and Student Ministries also need more space. To live out our mission as a church and continue making Christ-centered disciples, we need to create more room for people to worship and connect.

What’s Ahead Beginning February 1, 2026

We are taking a mission-focused step called our Room For You Initiative. This will help us prayerfully focus on making more room for others.

To increase our reach for God’s Kingdom, our worship services will exchange spaces beginning Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026:

Main Auditorium services will move to the current Next Gen space (this space will become known as Venue 1, near Door 1).

Next Gen services will move to the Main Auditorium (this space will become Venue 2, near Door 2).

This will give Next Gen a larger space and more capacity. They will continue offering two worship services that meet at 9:20 and 10:45 - ideal times on a Sunday morning for students, families and others.

For our Main Auditorium folks, they will continue to have three service time options (8:00, 9:20, and 10:45) to worship and connect together. This decision is the result of much prayer and planning. It’s more than a space exchange - it is a mission-driven step to steward our resources and make more room for others.

January Sermon Series

To ground this next season in Scripture and grow together as Christ-centered disciples, we’ll begin a teaching series in January called "One", based on Ephesians 4:4-6.

Each message will help prepare our hearts as we move toward February 1. We’d love for you to join us in worship services throughout January.

FAQ's

Why is Second Church making this change?

God is growing our church! Attendance is at a historic high. Our Next Gen service is regularly beyond capacity, and our Kids and Student Ministries need more space. This change helps us make room for more people to worship and grow as Christ-centered disciples.

What is changing on February 1, 2026?

Our worship venues will exchange spaces to increase capacity where it is most needed:

Main Auditorium services will move to the current Next Gen space. Next Gen services will move to the Main Auditorium.

Can I stay in the same service or venue where I currently attend?

Yes, you are welcome to remain in the space where you currently worship. However, the service style in that venue may be different from what you are used to.

How will this impact worship times?

Worship times will remain the same. Main Auditorium attendees will still have three service options at 8:00, 9:20, and 10:45. Next Gen will continue with two services at the most ideal times for students and families at 9:20 and 10:45.

How will the new spaces be prepared or updated?

Over time, both venues will be equipped and arranged to support meaningful, excellent worship experiences. As needed, updates in lighting, sound, seating, décor, and layout will ensure both environments thrive in their new locations.

What about KIDS World and Student Ministry?

Our KIDS World and Student Ministries are growing rapidly, and we are exploring solutions for allocating space for current growth. Our leadership team hopes to share updates in the near future.

Is this a permanent change?

This is an important first step, but not the final one. As our church continues to grow, additional steps may include adding services, adjusting programming, or even beginning a future building project —always seeking God’s direction first.

Have you considered offering an 8:00 a.m. service for Next Gen?

While adding an 8:00 am service for Next Gen may be a future option for additional growth, it would not meaningfully solve the current overcrowding in the 9:20 service. Here’s why:

The 9:20 service has become our “prime time” for both Main and Next Gen attendance — this is the hour most people prefer to worship. In contrast, young adults and families — the target demographic for Next Gen — tend not to choose an 8:00 a.m. service.

Currently, in the 9:20 service, the Next Gen attendance is averaging 375 in a room that is designed to seat 300. Even if 100 people shifted to an 8:00 a.m. service, the 9:20 Next Gen service would not have room for future growth during our most in-demand service time.

Before adding an earlier service, we are focused on solutions that expand access and create room for more people to connect with Jesus during the time they are most likely to attend.

Were other options or solutions considered, and how did the Elders come to this decision to exchange worship spaces?

Yes. Over the past two years, our leaders explored several possibilities including adding services, adjusting schedules, and reconfiguring existing spaces. After prayerful discussion, careful evaluation of attendance patterns, ministry needs, and available resources, the Elders unanimously agreed that exchanging the worship venues is the most effective and mission-focused next step. It allows us to create needed space immediately, steward our current facilities wisely, and support continued growth.
